Fundraiser Update:
SUCCESS!
Cincinnati area K-9 Search and Rescue
team gets cool beds!
Our 2008 fundraiser generated over $600 that was used
to purchase cooling beds for all the dogs of the Cincinnati
Area K-9 Search Team (CAST K-9) Just in time for the warmer
weather!
Police K-9 gets a custom fit bullet
proof vest!
Each year, the troop raises funds to provide safety
equipment to a local police K-9.
The 2007 recipient of the vest is Amigo, a
German Shepherd Dog that was recently acquired by the Madeira Police
Department. The troop has raised nearly $1800 for the
custom fit, K-9 Storm bullet proof vest for the dog. Past
fundraisers have been VERY successful
as well (see below.) More info about the vest
and another item we have provided in the past (a Hot n Pop
system) is below.
See below for the presentation info.
If you would like to help us in our efforts
to help the police K-9's, please send your

recipient:
Amigo
Amigo and officer Ed Farris were presented the
bullet proof vest from OLEKA and the HUMES fund on Oct. 8th.
Amigo did really well adjusting to wearing his new vest as he
showed it off at a city council meeting.
The 2006 Police K-9 fundraiser was a
complete success!
We raised close to $2500 and provided both the custom
bullet proof K-9 vest and the Hot n' pop system to the Hamilton Twp
Ohio Police K-9, Perro.

The equipment that we purchased for the Hamilton Township K-9
department last year includes:
A K-9 Storm Bullet Proof K-9 vest - (This is
also what Amigo will get this year) The vest is about
$1800 and it is custom fitted to the
dog. It includes both bullet and stab protection for the
K-9 when he is doing high risk jobs such
as building searches, tracking suspects and apprehension work.
Here's more info about the vest: http://www.k9storm.com/home.html
A Hot-n-Pop system- This system has a
temperature sensor for the inside of the K-9 patrol car. If
the pre-set temperature is reached, it sets off the lights and
siren, drops the windows and alerts the officer by pager. It
also has a remote door opener that allows the officer to let the dog
out of the car by pushing a button on his belt if the officer gets
attacked and needs help. The temperature sensors are in demand
because several police dogs have died when the interior of the car
got too hot while the officer was away from the car taking a report
or doing other routine work that doesn't involve the dog. K-9
units often get the older cars and if left to idle for a long period
of time, the air conditioner can start to blow hot air because the
compressor freezes up. When the outside temp is already high,
this can cook a dog in a very short amount of time. With this
system, the officer can leave the air conditioner on with
confidence. This system can protect both the K-9 and the
officer. The complete system with the pager is just over $1000.00
each.
Why don't the K-9's have the equipment they
need? Many departments do not get much of a budget (if
any) for the K-9 division. Amigo was purchased and is
maintained solely through the generous donations of individuals and
organizations. Police departments and the cities that fund them need
to use their budgets to provide the things that help the greatest
number of officers. A vest or hot-n-pop system only helps one
K-9 and that doesn't sit well with the budget department given the
high cost of these items. But you can help keep these K-9
officers safe and reduce some of the worry the human handler has for
his/her partner.
If you are a Police K-9 handler or with
a department that needs any of the above items please contact
us!! We are still looking for a recipient for this year's hot
n pop and we will be raising funds again next year. We are
also interested in raising enough funds to provide a police K-9 to a
department in the area that wants/needs one. Please help
spread the word to other handlers in the Ohio/ Kentucky/ Indiana
tri-state area. If you are outside this area and are in need
of equipment, please contact us because if a local K-9 can't be
found, then we will go outside of the local area. Preference
would be to have the equipment go to a K-9 in one of the three
states. In 2005 we raised close to $2000 and were able to
help 2 departments.
In 2005, we raised close to $2000 and
provided safety equipment to two departments. On June 10th of
2005, the Kentucky Post did a story on the presentation of a bullet
proof vest that we purchased for the Florence KY Police
Department for their K-9 officers Max and King.
The same day we also presented a hot-n-pop system (with a
pager) to Moose, the K-9 officer of the Gallatin County KY
Sheriff Department, but no media was in attendance.
We do this fundraiser for a local police K-9 each year, so if
you missed this year's fundraiser, be sure to join in next
year!

equipment, please visit the H.U.M.E.S. K9 fund website: www.HumesK9fund.org
