Where the DOGS are the scouts!

While the focus of this troop is not kids, children are welcome with an adult's supervision.  In Dog Scouts, it's the DOG that is the scout.  And Troop 107 is for the parents of dogs!

We have activities all around the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana tri-state area.

We are Dog Scout Troop #107, a group of dog parents who are dedicated to supporting the goals of Dog Scouts of America (the national organization.)  The goals are many-fold, but primary is the education of people about dogs, their care and training and the bond that is possible. This education is aimed at reducing the number of unwanted pets at the source.

Note: The use of the term "parent" has been used to describe the dog's handler, owner, caretaker, etc. because DSA defines parent as: A person who raises, nurtures, loves, provides for, teaches and protects a younger being so that he or she can become a welcome and productive member of society.  This comprises all the tasks involved in raising a youngster to be an independent adult.  Parenting begins even before the youngster is born or adopted, it is a part of the relationship within a family and something that lasts a lifetime.

Many people who share their lives with dogs have the same level of bond with their dogs as most people have with their human children.  While we recognise that as far as the law is concerned, dogs are considered property, we feel the relationship is much greater than that of object and property owner. Being a responsible dog owner involves parenting.

The troop offers numerous activities to encourage the development of the bond between you and your dog.  These activities include: weekly walks in parks all over the area, monthly meetings (that include education about positive training or other dog related topics), camp outs in cabins that allow dogs, swim days, kayak/canoe trips, seasonal day trips, introduction to various dog sports and support of local events for dogs and their people.

We strive to help in our community by participation in and the development of various fundraisers for 
K-9 search and rescue groups, animal shelters, assistance dog organizations and to purchase bullet proof vests for local police K-9's. Some of the members of the troop help at local shelters with the care and adoption of animals too!  Some of the troop members and their therapy dogs visit people in local hospitals, nursing homes and other care facilities, bring smiles to many faces. We have met with a few of the kids scout groups to talk about bite prevention, dog care and how our groups are similar.

What do Dog Scouts do?

A Dog Scout is a dog that has passed the Dog Scout obedience test.  Prior to taking that test, dogs and their people can enjoy the many "troop members only" events like troop meetings, hikes and troop parties.  Once the dog has passed the basic obedience test, they can represent DSA at public events like booths and parades.

Dog Scouts can also earn badges!  There are over 70 badges available and troop 107 is very lucky because the troop leader is certified to test dogs and their handlers for most of those badges.  To see the badges and their requirements, visit the "Dog Scout Badges" page of the main website: www.DogScouts.org  Don't forget to explore the rest of THIS site though!
